Silicone Cure Curves: Why ML, MH and t90 Are Not Mold-Opening Times

Molding, Tooling and Finishing
Key point: A curemeter curve compares a compound's cure response under defined conditions. Interpret ML, MH and t90 with the instrument, temperature and analysis definition. t90 is neither a universal demolding time nor direct proof of 90% chemical conversion in a finished part. Validate production timing with actual parts.

Confirm the report definitions

ML commonly denotes minimum torque; MH denotes maximum torque or a defined plateau torque within the analysis interval. t90 normally locates the time at 90% of the specified torque increase. Check the instrument algorithm and report definitions. A continuously rising curve and a clear plateau should not be compared without aligning the analysis.

Do not combine unlike instruments and conditions

ASTM D5289 addresses cure characteristics measured with rotorless curemeters. Its scope cautions that different instrument designs may produce different responses. Fix the instrument, temperature, method and specimen state for incoming-material trends. Establish appropriate correlation before combining equipment; do not attribute every difference to the compound.

Validate behavior in the mold

Real tooling and parts undergo heat transfer. Thick sections, inserts and geometry change process needs. Trial candidate conditions and inspect demolding, section condition, dimensions and function before setting an allowed window. Copying a coupon's t90 does not justify shortening every product cycle.

Illustrative project example

A shorter coupon t90 may coexist with internal problems in a thick metal-insert part. Review actual temperature and section condition. Curves screen possible directions; finished-part evidence confirms the process.

Frequently asked questions

Does higher MH always mean better quality?

No. Formulation, test conditions and target properties determine its meaning.

Does an acceptable t90 remove the need for post-curing?

No. Post-curing requirements follow the grade instructions, product properties and intended use.
