Managing Silicone Master and Limit Samples: Review and Replacement

Measurement, Quality and Procurement
Key point: Approved samples are not permanent standards unaffected by time. Storage, compression, contamination and coatings can change them. Keep drawings and numeric specifications as the primary basis, define the sample's appearance or tactile purpose and agree review, condition and replacement approval rules.

Separate sample roles

A master sample represents an approved state, a limit sample defines an accepted boundary and a defect sample supports training or investigation. Identify them separately. Link each to part number, revision, approved characteristics and approver, including what it does not represent.

Check continued fitness for purpose

Review color, tack or dirt, cracks, compression flattening, labels and packaging. Frequently pressed tactile samples may differ from sealed reserves. Use records help explain changes. Photographs record appearance but cannot fully replace touch, elasticity or three-dimensional size.

Link old and replacement samples

Validate the replacement against current specifications and obtain the agreed approval. Record why the old sample expired, the new sample's source, start date and workstations. Withdraw old working samples while retaining records so conflicting references are not used together. Resolve specification disputes before replacing the reference.

Illustrative project example

A sticky aged limit sample can cause inspectors to accept increasingly sticky parts. Stop using it and review the approved record instead of turning sample aging into a new requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Does a customer's signature make a sample valid forever?

No. Revision and storage-condition agreements still apply; signatures do not stop physical aging.

What if only one approved sample exists?

Confirm its condition and purpose, then establish approved working and sealed reserve references where appropriate to protect the sole evidence.
